As a reminder, regular Sire Denathrius was a free card and can’t be crafted or disenchanted.

The above craftable cards will be eligible for a full dust refund for two weeks following Patch 25.0.3. Battlecry: Deal 5 damage amongst enemies. We’ll continue to keep our eye on how the metagame develops and make any further adjustments needed in our next balance window, reserved for a few weeks from now.

This balance update was reserved for only the most standout cards immediately after expansion unlock. With a couple days of data, we can see that it is still a very popular and polarizing card, warping early meta development in a way we want to address before the World Championship (December 16-18). Sire Denathrius is a card we have had our eyes on for some time, but we wanted to see how he performed in the new expansion first. Shockspitter is exactly that type of card, ending games sooner, more easily, and more consistently than we intended. What's perhaps more interesting here is that Druids and Rogues (plus Discard Warlocks in Wild) did get away with no immediate nerfs for the time being.ĭev Comment: We set up this balance window to address any changes we wanted to make immediately after the expansion launched. The change to Shockspitter isn't terribly surprising either, as it has been an early standout card for Hunters everywhere - as you might've noticed from our March of the Lich King Launch Decks compilation. And they also did promise to react as needed, "at least 5 days before" the opening of the upcoming Hearthstone World Championship. That's also how we knew something might eventually happen, as some time ago Hearthstone Final Design Team noted how they were keeping an eye on the card's power level (and even on Prince Renathal, actually - like "father", like "son").

Sire Denathrius might have had it coming for a longer while, as players were raising red flags even during the previous pre-launch events: from the early preview at Death Knight Showmatch to various Theorycraft Streams. You may not be able to resume playing until this process is completed. However, this does not require any mobile storefront approvals - you will notice an immediate update taking place right upon entering the game.

When a nerf happens, players are allowed to disenchant nerfed cards for their full crafting cost, for a short period after the nerf occurs. Nerfs comprise the majority of all Hearthstone card changes buffs to cards are less common, but ever since Patch 17.3, buffs too have been seen in almost every expansion cycle. Most nerfs are fairly straightforward mathematical reductions in power, such as increasing a card's mana cost by one, or decreasing a minion's health by one. Earlier in Hearthstone's history, nerfs could be expected perhaps once during an expansion cycle, whereas now three batches of nerfs during that same time period isn't rare. Due to this, new expansions can be made to include more powerful cards, as power outliers can be nerfed in a matter of a week or two. In modern day Hearthstone, developers are much more willing to take risks and nerf cards more often. In recent times, especially later than 2020, developers have took on a new view for nerfing cards. In Hearthstone, the developers used to have a strong stance of nerfing cards only when absolutely necessary, but have did so on numerous occasions. New cards and developments cause cards to become either effective or ineffective, in different and unforeseen ways, depending on the meta, and these issues should reflect the degree of power of a nerf.

A card may be too strong in a particular meta, and if it is nerfed, it might still see some play however, in future metas, the nerf may have been too drastic and the card may be too weak to ever see any play, unless new cards are printed to synergize with the nerfed card again. The degree to which the power of a card should be nerfed can prove difficult to determine, and it requires some foresight into future cards. In addition, nerfs can also be design-related, called for by the developers when it is necessary to keep in line with a design goal in mind while simultaneously avoiding potential problems with future cards that may be printed. In Hearthstone, nerfs are often called for by players when a card or deck in a particular meta is deemed to be too powerful, non-interactive, or simply too frustrating to play against. The opposite of a nerf is a buff (not to be confused with the identical term for an enchantment). A nerf is a card change that causes a card to become less effective or less powerful.
